Through the Mists

Through the Mists — Narration

Whatever banner you carried into the Shrouded Isles, whatever oath, grudge, ambition, duty or accident first set your keel upon these waters, all such reasons have now been overtaken by a simpler truth.

You are here.

The mists have closed.

And no ship in your current condition is leaving by the same road it entered.

That does not make your cause hopeless. It makes it practical.

The captains who survive in this place are not always the strongest in the open field, nor the proudest, nor the richest, nor the most righteous. They are the ones who learn fastest what the archipelago demands of them. Timber matters. Powder matters. Rope, sailcloth, nails, pitch, fresh water, charts, lookouts, anchorages and disciplined hands matter. So do allies, whether temporary or lasting, and so does the knowledge of who cannot be trusted with an undefended beach at their back.

The isles do not reward idleness.

There are resources to be claimed here, but none of them are safely waiting to be collected. Salvage must be hauled from shattered wrecks. Ground must be secured before stores can be gathered in peace. Favourable coves and useful islands must be held if they are to be used. Knowledge comes in scraps: a sound channel learned from a wary local pilot, a warning bought in Blackquay, a chart fragment taken from an older wreck, a pattern noticed only because someone survived the first mistake long enough to name it.

Every gain must be made material.

Repair what can be repaired. Strip what cannot. Arm those still willing to fight. Find timber enough to replace what the crossing took from you. Gather iron, canvas, tar, food, powder and the thousand minor necessities that stand between a dream of escape and a vessel actually capable of it. If fortune favours you, you may one day command not merely a patched hulk but a flotilla stout enough to challenge the veil.

Until then, survival remains a campaign rather than a single battle.

You will need footholds before you can claim security. You will need security before you can build. You will need strength before you can hold what you have built. Some captains will seek alliance. Some will choose conquest. Most will do both in their turn. There is no contradiction in that. The Shrouded Isles are too lean a country for purity.

Remember also that you are not the first to make this attempt.

The beaches and coves of the archipelago are littered with the evidence. Here a wreck long picked over for nails. There a landing site fortified in haste and abandoned faster still. Old charts, broken weapons, waterlogged ledgers, and survivor tales all agree on at least one point: those who endure here do so by adapting to the place as it is, not by demanding that it become something kinder.

Blackquay, if you find it, will teach you the same lesson in stone and wet timber.

People survive in the mists.

They do not thrive.

Let that warning sharpen you rather than weaken you. You need not love these waters. You need not understand them. You need only outlast them long enough to leave them behind on your own terms.

So gather your scattered warriors.

Take count of what remains.

Secure ground.

Scavenge, bargain, fight, rebuild, and learn.

The route home does not yet exist.

You will have to make it.
